About New Age Dance

The New Age Dance derived from Uday Shankar’s Creative Dance Style has added a new dimension and direction to the grammar of Indian Dance.

·   It went beyond the classical and traditional and explored new rhythmic body movements and enhanced flexibility and physical fitness.

·  It evoked new idioms that were both TIMELESS and UNIVERSAL.

This innovative modernism, built on Indianness, that awoke sensibilities, is what has come to be known as the Shankar’s technique of “New Age Dance”.

The “Uday Shankar Style” is a dance form that is Indian in origin and spirit, modern in presentation with a universal appeal.  This style is creative and is a blend of Western Classical and Indian Classical dance forms with a modern approach.  The discipline, dedication and sincerity required to master this style is in no way less demanding than that required for training in any of the other classical dance forms.

Uday Shankar, the creator of this style was a revolutionist in the field of creative dance.  He wanted that his followers or disciples be innovative and creative, and their efforts should, at all times, produce that which is aesthetically pleasing, communicating to everyone, without barrier of language, race or age and universally appealing to people of all levels of intellect and status.

According to Uday Shankar, I quote, “Give the audience what they like before they know what they like”, and this is our Aim and our Spirit.

Sangeeta G, a professional dancer, is one of the pivotal figure in the current explosion of new choreographers defining Uday Shankar’s innovative modern technique of New Age dance built on Indianness.  CREATIVE DANCE Limited (CDL) in London is promoting this unique style by a radical new training programme which draws on yoga, body co-ordination through a blend of Indian and Western classical and folk dance styles.  By focusing on dance compositions and choreographing on contract, CDL’s aim has been "to give the audience what they want before they know what they want" - quoting Uday Shankar - and the result has been acclaimed around the world.
